British Embassy Offers Chevening Cambridge Scholarships (20/10/2009)
For the first time this year, the British Embassy is seeking applications from talented Koreans who want to study at the University of Cambridge under a new Chevening Cambridge Scholarship jointly funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Cambridge Overseas Trust.
Two fully-funded scholarships are available for the academic year 2010/11. The scholarship will cover the full cost of one year of postgraduate study in the UK, including tuition fees, monthly stipend and return airfare.
The Chevening Cambridge Scholarship scheme aims to attract outstanding young people who are academically excellent and have the ambition to become leaders in their chosen fields. A typical successful candidate should demonstrate the potential to benefit from the scheme and use it to further develop their career.

- The word 'Chevening' is synonymous with prestigious scholarships to the UK. 'Chevening House' is the name of the official country residence of the British Foreign Secretary. In 1994 Douglas Hurd, then Foreign Secretary, renamed the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's Scholarships and Awards Scheme as 'The British Chevening Scholarships Programme', after Chevening House.

WHAT IS THE CHEVENING CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME?
The Chevening Cambridge Scholarship scheme was founded in October 2009 to fund candidates from the Republic of Korea to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge. Two scholarships are available and will fund one year of study for a Master's programme in academic year 2010/11. The arrangement is unique to the Republic of Korea and is jointly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Cambridge Overseas Trust.
WHO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Applicants should:
- normally have a 2:1 degree at university level (Korean equivalent: 3.8 out of 4.5 and 3.6 out of 4.3);
- gain admission to the University of Cambridge in the normal way;
- meet the minimum standard in English language required by the Board of Graduate Studies;
- be a national of the Republic of Korea.
DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE SEPARATELY?
Yes, you must apply for admission to the University of Cambridge in the normal way. Any offer of a scholarship is dependent on the candidate getting admission to a college (no restrictions) at the University of Cambridge. WHAT COSTS DO THE SCHOLARSHIPS COVER?
Each scholarship will cover:
- the University Composition Fee at the overseas rate
- approved College fee
- an annual stipend (set at the normal Chevening rate), sufficient to support a single student
- one return economy flight between the Republic of Korea and the UK
The scholarship will not contribute towards the cost of dependants, purchase of books, excess luggage or other items.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?

Candidates should note that they are applying for the Chevening Cambridge scheme on the application form.
- The deadline for application to Chevening Cambridge scholarships is 7 December 2009. The deadline for applying to the University of Cambridge is 15 December 2009.
- Successful candidates at the first stage will be contacted individually around early February 2010
- Submit your IELTS certificate (report form - Academic module only), and supporting documentation, listed below by 12 February 2010
- Interview: March 2010
