The UK has made significant progress in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions

The UK has made significant progress in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, which will continue to fall in future years, demonstrating that it is possible to move to a lower carbon economy while maintaining economic growth and competitiveness.

  • Actual emissions from activity within the UK fell by around 15% between 1990 and 2006, with net emissions  falling by more than 20%.
  • Emissions are therefore already below the UK's target under the Kyoto Protocol to reduce emissions to 12.5% below base year levels by 2008-12.
  • Latest projections suggest net emissions could fall to around 23% below base year levels by 2010.
  • The UK economy has grown 48% from 1990 to 2006.
