Preventing extremism
Our aim is to stop people becoming or supporting terrorists and violent extremists.
Our Countering Terrorism & Radicalisation Programme directly supports the UK Government's unified counter terrorism strategy CONTEST in countries we've identified as priorities with other UK Government departments.
We work closely with our foreign partners to build up their capacity to tackle terrorism and extremism which threatens UK interests.
Programme
The Programme supports work across each of CONTEST’s four strands: Prevent, Pursue, Protect and Prepare. For Prevent, the Programme aims to develop:
- civil society
- good governance
- education
- human rights
- rule of law
- platforms for challenging extremists' narratives
...in key countries where the lack of these areas creates grievances that drive radicalisation.
Our projects are normally led locally by our partners with support from our embassies and high commissions.
How do we select projects to counter terrorism and radicalisation?
Projects funded by the Countering Terrorism & Radicalisation Programme must meet one or more of these objectives:
- challenge extremist ideology and support mainstream voices
- disrupt the ideologues and strengthen vulnerable institutions
- support individuals who are being targeted
- increase the resilience of communities against violent extremists
- address the grievances which ideologues are exploiting such as a lack of human rights and rule of law
- improve our understanding of the causes of radicalisation
- communicate our aims and work.
